Guidelines for taking a vehicle abroad

• We will ensure all levels are checked on your vehicle before you travel but remember to check levels regularly while you are away. Oil, Water, brake fluid and tyre pressures should be checked regularly, don’t rely exclusively on vehicle electronic warnings.
• Make sure you have headlight adjustment stickers ready.
• Check what individual countries require but it is always sensible to have a fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs, warning triangle and a HiVis jacket.
• A 'country of residence' sticker is a legal requirement in most countries.
• If we are not providing you with Insurance, tell your car insurer that you are taking your vehicle abroad and extend your policy if necessary. If we are providing cover then we will provide you with a European Travel Document.
• We will provide you with a VE103 certificate which is the European Standard replacement for a V5 (Log Book) for a vehicle on hire, make sure you have any emergency helpline numbers, passport, driving licence (international driving licence if necessary), together with details of any breakdown (which we can provide) and travel insurance and if appropriate your European Health Insurance Card.
  
  Leave a copies of vital details at home, with a friend or relative in case you lose the originals and require copies in a hurry. Keep originals separate and in a safe place, do not leave them in the car.
• Before you go obtain road maps and familiarise yourself with road signs and general road rules of the country you are visiting.
• Avoid leaving your possessions in an unattended vehicle, try and park your car in a secure parking area and avoid parking in secluded, poorly lit areas.
• Never pick up hitch-hikers.
• When possible, drive on major roads and avoid driving at night.
• If an attacker tries to pull you over or block your way, do not stop the car - sound the horn, flash your headlights to attract attention and stay in the locked car if possible.
