Wimbledon is a London suburb which forms part of the London Borough of Merton. Its located 7 miles south west of Charing Cross. It is most famous for the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship that takes place annually towards the end of June.

There is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to the Iron Age when the hill fort on Wimbledon common is believed to have been constructed. The original centre of the town was at the top of the hill near the common.

The manor of Wimbledon was crown property for the majority of the years between 1398 and 1588. In 1588, the lands of the manor were given to the Cecil family and a new manor house and gardens were formed in the formal Elizabethan style.

By the 17th century, the town’s close proximity to the capital began attracting many wealthy families to the village. It continued to grow and the introduction of the 18th century stagecoach service from the Dog and Fox public house to London encouraged more people to move to the area.

Wimbledon’s residential development continued throughout the years reaching a peak in the 1930’s. Strong demand for housing, especially the larger properties in the Wimbledon Village area, has seen prices increase to amongst the highest in the outer London area.
