Wallington Local Information
Wallington is a town in the London Borough of Sutton. The name
derives from the Anglo Saxon ‘Waletone’ meaning ‘village
of the Britons’. Wallington was mentioned in the Domesday
Book and the old village was located around the bridge over the
River Wandle.
A railway station was opened in 1847 in fields to the south of
Wallington. This led to the development of the area. In the 1860’s
a prestigious estate of gothic revival villas and the Holy Trinity
Church were created by Nathaniel Bridges. Development continued
and by the time of World War I, the new high street had been created
to the south of the station. The town hall and public library were
built in the 1930’s.
Pre-World War I, Wallington was an important centre for the production
of lavender oil. At the junction of Woodcote Road and Stafford Road
there is a large sculpture representing a lavender plant to commemorate
those days. The town’s Christmas lights also represent lavender
plants.
There is a regular farmers market on the second Saturday of each
month which takes place outside the town hall. The town also has
several High Street stores and many major banks and building societies.
The Car Hire Company offers quality van rental at a value price
and our delivery and collection service is what separates us from
the competition.
