Tolworth Local Information

Tolworth is a residential suburb of London in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It is located 11 miles south west of Charing Cross. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Taleorde.

In the 18802’s the major employers in the town were the brickfields in Red Lion Road and a 550 acre dairy farm owned by William Hipwell.

With the opening of the Kingston bypass in 1927, houses and amenities began to spring up replacing the old farms. The town of Tolworth mainly consists of 1930’s semi detached houses and small to medium commercial and retail businesses. There is an industrial area to the north of the suburb bordering the major A3 road that links London with Portsmouth. Tolworth has a railway station that is on the branch line from London Waterloo to Chessington.

The Ministry of Defence used to have a large office development in the town but this building has lain vacant for many years. The Broadway is the principal shopping centre and is home to Tolworth Tower, the tallest building in outer London at 22 storeys high. Opened in 1964, this complex encompasses an office block and hotel as well as several retail units.
