Thames Ditton Local Information
Thames Ditton is a village in the County of Surrey. It is 12.2
miles south west of Charing Cross and is on the border of the Greater
London area. Despite its proximity to London, it still retains its
village character.
The village is first mentioned in a Royal charter dated 983 and
also in the Domesday Book of 1086. After the Norman Conquest, Thames
Ditton was given to the monks of Merton Priory who built a church
which was completed by 1179.
The village had no real significance until the construction of
Hampton Court Palace. When King Henry VIII claimed the palace in
1525 the village started to grow as palace workers took up residence
there. Thames Ditton Island became the main crossing point across
the Thames for people travelling from Surrey to the Palace.
During the 18th century, highwaymen plagued the roads around the
village. By 1801, there were around 1,300 people living in the village.
Many of these would have been employed as domestic or ancillary
workers at Hampton Court or other nearby mansions. The village continued
to grow during the 19th century with the coming of the railway in
1849.
Between 1911 and 1980, the village was home to the AC Cars factory,
a specialist automobile manufacturer. The company is now based in
Malta and its former Thames Ditton site is an office complex.
