Southfields Local Information

Located in the London Borough of Wandsworth, Southfields gets it’s name from an historical class system which reference the “south fields” of the manor of Dunsford and dates all the way back to 1247. The area was still primarily woods until the late nineteenth century, but the railway system spurred growth in the area, and it quickly became a hub for building. This vast growth has somewhat limited parking to a few street spots, and a few large lots for your van rental.

The main residential area of Southfields is known as “The Grid” since it is a series of parallel roads that make up a grid at their intersections. This same area is made up of mostly large Victorian style homes and some have been converted to much sought after flats.

Pubs were prohibited from being built by a city ordinance until the late 1990’s, but that has since been lifted and now many of the popular watering holes dot the streets. Home prices have risen drastically in recent years due to the great schools and transportation choices. There is a large South African population in Southfields, mostly due to the proximity to Wimbledon and love of sports. A few famous residents include author Paul Richards, Rugby player Will Greenwood and comedian Paul Merton to name a few.
