Sidcup Local Information
Sidcup is a place in the London Borough of Bexley. It’s a
suburban town situated 11.3 miles to the south east of Charing Cross.
The town still retains many parks and open spaces.
There is evidence of a settlement in Sidcup dating back to 1254.
The town was firmly established as a tiny hamlet, on the road from
London to Maidstone, by the late 1600’s. The name is thought
to be taken from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘Cetecopp’ meaning
‘seat shaped or flat topped hill. The town grew slowly over
the next two centuries to become a group of houses around the Black
Horse Inn. The inn was established around 1692 and still survives
today, although not in the original building.
During the 18th and 19th century, the area became very popular
with the landed gentry. Several of their manor houses remain in
the town although these have now all been converted to other uses.
The arrival of the railway in 1866 dramatically spurred Sidcup’s
growth. Gas lighting was installed in 1882, mains drainage followed
the year later and electricity followed in the early 1900’s.
The majority of residential development began in the late 1920’s
and early 1930’s. Sidcup was on the route of German bombers
heading for London and as such suffered extensive damage during
World War II.
It doesn’t matter where you go in Sidcup, or anywhere else
in the London area, The Car Hire Company is there for you every
step of the way to ensure your car or van rental is a fabulous experience.
