Orpington Local Information

Orpington is a town in the London Borough of Bromley. Stone Age and Bronze Age remnants have been found in various parts of the town and the remains of an Iron Age farmstead were excavated in 1956. Until the railway came to the town in 1868, Orpington was a small country village surrounded by fruit farms, orchards and hop fields.

The railway linked Orpington to Central London and Sevenoaks and this saw the beginning of residential development in the area. The station was rebuilt in 1904 bringing the number of platforms to six. The improvement in rail services led to a boom in housing development in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

During the 2nd World War the town suffered bomb damage and V-1 and V-2 attacks due to its proximity to the Biggin Hill Aerodrome. The last British civilian killed by German bombing was killed in her home in Orpington.

Orpington Priory, now a public library and museum, is a medieval ‘hall house’ The original house was demolished and rebuilt in 1290. It passed into private hands in the 17th century. The garden forms a public park and contains a natural pond.

The town has featured in several TV programmes including The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and The Bill.
