North Cheam Local Information
North Cheam is the retail half of Cheam, the other half being Cheam
Village (mainly residential, as with the south of Cheam). Cheam
is located in the borough of Sutton. In the Middle Ages, Cheam was
the home of potters, and in 1810, at the time of the Domesday Book,
Chertsey Abbey owned Cheam.
Later, in 1538, part of Cheam was given to King Henry VIII. That
year he began work on Nonsuch Palace, which he decorated outlandishly.
It was later sold and demolished, but the name remains in the forms
of schools and parks amongst other things.
Lumley Chapel, found next to Saint Dunstan’s church, is the
oldest standing building in Sutton. Whitehall is a house in the
centre of Cheam Village, with the original structure built in 1500
(it has been added to, and the external; weatherboard is from the
1700s – there is a medieval well in the yard that is believed
to have served a building older than the original one from the 1500s).
In 1801, when the first census was taken, the population was 616.
Cheam School was originally located in Cheam and Prince Phillip
attended it in the years before its move in 1934.
The Car Hire Company also has moving vans available for hire so
that you can move your family to a new location with ease. Our moving
vans are up to 3500kg in weight and can transport heavy furnishings.
We offer quality for a value price.
