New Malden is sometimes referred to as a Korean Town as it has
the biggest population of South Koreans living in Europe.
Some Koreans say that New Malden was a little bit of a shabby town
when they first arrived. A lot of shops and businesses were shutting
down and their arrival prompted a kind of regeneration, which began
creating a bit of an expat type community with Korean shops, bars,
café’s and restaurants opening up.
The relaxing of immigration rules in 1989 enabled the British Korean
population to grow within a short space of time to approximately
30,000 with estimations of around 20,000 living in New Malden.
Some of the earliest arrivals were The Park family who in 1991 created
the first Korean Restaurant in New Malden called the Asadal. Their
thinking was to bring a little bit of Korean taste to a very English
town. Today the restaurant really stands as you walk down the high
street.
As you walk down the high street in New Malden you will probably
notice that around 30 percent of the signage is in the elaborate
Korean script.
There is no main reason why Korean’s have chosen New Malden
to settle apart from usual factors such as a Station with good links,
good schools nearby and good housing. The UK section of Samsung
Electronics was situated in New Malden but has since relocated its
head office to Chertsey a short distance away.
During the 2002 World cup, which was staged in Korea, New Malden
went into an absolute frenzy of excitement and celebration. As South
Korea managed to get into the Semi Finals the whole town of New
Malden was ablaze with patriotic support.
