Hampton Court Local Information

Hampton Court is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is the site of the famous Hampton Court Palace.

Originally a 14th century manor house, it was leased by Thomas Wolsey the then Archbishop of York in 1514. He spent extravagantly over the next few years rebuilding the house to form the basis of the present palace. He was later forced to hand the property over to King Henry VIII in 1525.

Henry completely rebuilt sections of the Palace and it remains the only one of fifty palaces that he built. He added the Great Hall and the Royal Tennis Court which is still used today for the game of real tennis.

During the reign of William and Mary, half the palace was replaced and new wings were added to house the state apartments. The house continued being used until the reign of George III when it ceased to be a royal residence. Restoration of the Great Hall began in 1796 and by 1838 the palace was opened to the public.

Several ghosts are said to haunt the Palace including those of Henry VIII and three of his wives, Jane Seymour, Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn.

In addition to the Palace, the grounds sport the famous Hampton Court Maze and every December there is an ice rink in the Palace forecourt.
