Elmers End Local Information
Elmers End is a place in the London Borough of Bromley, 11 miles
south of Charing Cross. One theory about the name Elmers End is
that a famous highwayman, Elmer, was hung at the crossroads. The
other, and more likely theory, is that the place got its name because
of the many elm trees in the area.
The railway was opened through the town in 1864. The only line
still in active service is the line between Hayes and Charing Cross.
Trains run every 15 minutes during the day to Cannon Street or Charing
Cross. One of the former platforms is now used as the terminus for
the Tramlink service to Croydon.
Close to Elmers End railway station is an old sewage farm. The
sewage works is thought to be contaminated with heavy metals and
is therefore deemed unfit for residential development. The sewage
farm has since been converted into South Norwood Country Park, a
popular place for cyclists.
The industrial estate that used to be on the south side of the
railway has all but closed down and is now the site of a Tesco supermarket.
A little way further south there still remains a paint factory.
Whatever your reason for being in Elmers End, hiring your van rental
from the Car Hire Company will provide you with the best possible
quality at an affordable price.
