Egham Local Information

Egham is a historic town, 19 miles west of Central London in the County of Surrey. Historians can date its history back to between 900 – 700 BC through archaeological evidence of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements. The town was on the Roman Road from London to Silchester. Egham was a busy coaching town in the 18th and 19th century but now heavy traffic can bypass the town.

Half a mile from Egham station is Runnymede Meadow, the site where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. The American Bar Association erected a memorial in the form of a domed classical temple on the site in 1957 to commemorate the event. Runnymede was also the site of horse racing between 1734-1884.

Close by, you will find The Commonwealth Air forces memorial to the men and women of the Allied Air Forces who died during World War II. The memorial, on Coopers Hill, was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. From the top of the tower you can get magnificent views over the Thames to Windsor.

Nathaniel Cohen in Egham High Street opened the first Labour Exchange in England in 1885.

The ornate Royal Holloway College is on the outskirts of Egham. Part of the University of London it was modelled on the French Chateau de Chambord. Designed as a college for women, it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886 and contains an excellent small art gallery.
