Edenbridge Local Information

Edenbridge lies on the banks of the River Eden on the Kent/Surrey border. It is situated in the Sevenoaks district of Kent.

The village was originally a crossing point over the river that was used by the Romans to transport wood and iron from Ashdown Forest to London. After the Romans left, a Saxon named Eadhelm became the leader of the people. He built a bridge over the river and the village became known as Eadhelmbridge, later abbreviated to Edenbridge. The latest picturesque bridge was built in 1834.

The iron industry brought prosperity to the town in the 1500’s. The raw materials came from the surrounding areas and the population of the town increased. Edenbridge suffered badly in the early 1800’s when the industry was relocated to the Midlands.

The town started to regain its wealth in the mid 1800’s with the advent of the railways. Edenbridge was the crossing point for the north – south and the east – west railway lines making it a loading point for local produce. The railway also enabled commuters to relocate to the town and travel daily to the capital for work.

Many medieval timber buildings still remain in the town, one of which houses the Eden Valley Museum which tells the story of the Eden Valley, its people, buildings and natural environment.
