Chislehurst Local Information
Chislehurst is a village in the London Borough of Bromley. The
name is derived from the Saxon ‘cisel’ meaning gravel
and ‘hyrst’ meaning wooded hill.
Camden Place, now a golf club, is where Napoleon III, the French
Emperor, died in exile in 1873. His body was originally buried in
St Mary’s church before it was removed to Farnborough Abbey.
There is a memorial to him in the woods and many street names in
Chislehurst are connected to the imperial family.
One of the local attractions is Chislehurst Caves. These ancient
caves were originally used to mine flint and chalk. During the 2nd
World War, thousands of people used them as nightly air raid shelters.
There is a chapel in the caves and one child was born in the caves
during the war. She was given the name Cavina. The caves are said
to be haunted.
Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Rolling Stones have all performed
live in the caves and a number of television programmes and films
have been filmed there.
Malcolm Campbell, the former land and water speed record holder
was born in the village and is buried in St. Nicholas Parish church.
The Car Hire Company offers quality van rental at a value price
and our delivery and collection service is what separates us from
the competition.
