Chessington Local Information
Chessington is a town in the Greater London Borough of Kingston
upon Thames. During the 18th century Chessington was a tiny village
that stood on a large and nearly desolate common. Now it is part
of the urban sprawl of Greater London.
Chessington Hall was a country house in the village and between
1754 and 1783 was the home to the failed playwright Samuel Crisp.
He is buried in the churchyard in Chessington and commemorated by
a memorial in the church. The original hall, dating back to 1520
was demolished in 1832 and replaced by a newer building. This in
turn was demolished in 1965 and a housing estate built on the estate
grounds.
Today the best know attraction in the town is Chessington World
of Adventures. This is a family theme park and zoo which is open
to the public from March to October each year. The park is split
into ten individually themed areas. Also within the park you can
see an English civil war mansion, Burnt Stub.
The former formula one team Brabham used to have their factory
in Chessington. This has now been taken over by the Carlin DPR GP2
team.
The author Enid Blyton lived at 207 Hook Road between 1920 and
1924. The house sports a Blue Plaque commemorating this.
