Chertsey Local Information
Chertsey is a town in the County of Surrey and is situated on the
River Thames.
The town grew up around Chertsey Abbey, founded by the then Bishop
of London, Eorcenwald in 666. It is one of the oldest towns in England.
The Abbey became one of the largest Bendictine abbeys in England
until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. The King used some
of the stone from the Abbey to construct Oatlands Palace. The site
was later given to Sir William Fitzwilliam and now only slight traces
remain amongst later buildings.
One of the Abbey’s bells, weighing just over half a ton,
is still in use at St. Peter’s church and is one of the oldest
bells still in use in the county.
Chertsey has also featured in literature. It was destroyed by attacking
Martians in H. G. Wells’ book, ‘The War of the Worlds’.
The popular tourist attraction, Thorpe Park, is also in the town.
Thorpe Park was the UK’s first theme park and features a vast
array of thrill seekers rides.
Whatever your reason for being in Chertsey, hiring your van rental
from the Car Hire Company will provide you with the best possible
quality at an affordable price.
