Cheam Local Information
Cheam is a large suburban village in the London Borough of Sutton.
It is divided into two main areas North Cheam and Cheam Village.
North Cheam is more of a shopping area whereas Cheam village is
residential.
Cheam’s history can be traced back to the early 11th century
when it was owned by Chertsey Abbey. In the Middle Ages, the area
was know for its potteries and in 1538 part of Cheam was handed
over to Henry VIII.
Lumley Chapel, next to St Dunstan’s church in the town centre,
is the oldest standing building in the Borough of Sutton. Also in
the centre of Cheam village you can visit Whitehall, the original
home of Cheam School (founded 1645) until its move to Berkshire
in 1934. The school was attended by Prince Philip in the years immediately
preceding its move. This original timber framed house dates back
to the early 1500’s. It has since been extended and is open
to the public on most afternoons.
Within Nonsuch Park there is a gothic revival mansion built in
the early 19th century. Nonsuch Park was originally a deer hunting
park established by Henry VIII and it surrounded the former Nonsuch
Palace. There is nothing left of the palace but occasionally the
service wing of the mansion house is opened to the public.
Wherever you go in Cheam, or anywhere else in Great Britain, The
Car Hire Company will ensure that you receive the perfect van rental
