Caterham Local Information
Caterham is a town in the Tandridge District in the County of Surrey.
It is located in a valley cut into the dip slope of the North Downs.
The original village was on the ridge above the modern town and
is now known as Caterham-on-the-Hill. The modern town didn’t
come into being until the Victorian Age when development began around
the Caterham railway line in 1856.
The church of St. Lawrence is the town’s oldest church dating
back to Norman times. With the expansion of the town a larger church
was needed and in 1866, St Mary the Virgin Parish Church was constructed.
Caterham barracks, on the hill, was a depot for foot guard regiments
from 1877 until the 1990’s when the site was redeveloped for
housing.
Caterham Cars, a manufacturer of specialist lightweight sports
cars, is in based in the town. Their only current model is the Caterham
Seven which is a direct evolution of the Series 3 Lotus Seven designed
by Colin Campbell.
The town has a small local history museum, the East Surrey Museum,
that opened to the public in 1981. Started by the archaeological
section of the Bourne Society, it is open on Wednesdays and at weekends.
Whatever your reason for being in Caterham, hiring your van rental
from the Car Hire Company will provide you with the best possible
