Bromley Local Information
Bromley is a town in the London Borough of the same name. It is
situated to the south east of the capital. The town benefits from
excellent transport links into the capital and as such it has become
a popular suburban town.
The town has a history dating back to Roman times. The current
Civic Centre is built on the site of the original Bishop’s
Palace, seat of the Bishops of Rochester. This site was mentioned
in the Domesday book of 1082. The Bishop of Rochester was responsible
for setting up the first weekly market in the town in 1205. The
market continues to this day. The Palace was sold into private hands
in 1844 and the Bishop’s moved away from Bromley.
During the 19th century, Bromley was a fashionable spa town and
health centre. The railway arrived in 1858 and this led to the development
of residential housing in the town centre.
Bromley town centre is said to be one of the best retail centers
in the south east of England with over 400 shops. There are also
at least 80 restaurants and bars in the town.
The novelist H. G. Wells was born in Bromley in 1866 and the town
is mentioned in the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice.
It doesn’t matter where you go in Bromley, or anywhere else
in the London area, The Car Hire Company is there for you every
