Beckenham Local Information
Beckenham is a small suburban town in the London Borough of Bromley.
It is one of the few towns in the country to be set among woods
and parkland and this setting has made it a very attractive environment
for people to live in.
The town has a rich history with Saxon, Iron Age and Roman remains
having been found in the area. Many old buildings remain in Beckenham.
The most notable of these is the 14th century St Georges Church
with its 13th century Lynchgate - the oldest in England. The church
stands on a 6th century Saxon site. Traces of a Roman road can still
be seen in Beckenham Place Park. There are also lots of Victorian
and Georgian buildings still standing in the town.
Beckenham offers not only the usual range of high street stores
but also a wide range of independent specialist shops. The town
also has a wide range of restaurants and bars.
Beckenham has had some famous residents. The naturalist Charles
Darwin lived in the town for a time and Enid Blyton's wrote many
of her early books in Beckenham. More recently, the singer David
Bowie lived in the town in the late 1960's and early 70's and played
in The Three Tuns public house in the High Street (now named The
Rat and Parrot).
