West Wickham Local Information

In the London Borough of Bromley, West Wickham is 10.3 miles south east of Charing Cross in central London and is boarded by Beckenham to the north, Hayes and Keston to the east, and Surrey on the south and west.

Over half of the town is open land and is made up of woodland and agricultural land, and due its proximity to London, it is considered a suburb of the city. West Wickham has a good choice of local shops, restaurants and pubs, and there is also the popular Beccehamians Rugby Union Club formed in 1933.

Dating back to 1068, West Wickham was a settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book, and grew from a small hamlet into a village and eventually a suburb throughout the years.

West Wickham railway station was opened in 1882 when the line from Elmers End to Hayes was opened. The town is now situated on the Hayes line direct into the city centre.

In World War 1, 300 men from the village went to fight with the loss of 70 lives. A memorial was erected on the High Street for those who died and was later moved to Corkscrew Hill. In World War 2, the town suffered from heavy bombing and casualties.
