Thames Ditton is in the County of Surrey and the district of Elmbridge.
Its postal code is KT7 and has a population of around 5,863. It
has still managed to keep its village feel even though it is on
the edge of Greater London.
Thames Ditton was mentioned in the Domesday book around the period
after the Norman Conquest. The land was given to the Merton Priory
Monks who then organised for a church to be built. 1179 records
the first details of church business.
The area was unimportant up until around 1525. This was largely
due to the fact that it was rather cut off due to its marshy wetlands.
The arrival of Hampton Court Palace put the area on the map as Thames
Ditton Island as it was known then became the key crossing on the
River Thames to the palace. People working at the palace began to
settle and live in Thames Ditton.
Around the time of the eighteenth century the area became somewhat
hazardous to travel through, as it was full of highwaymen waiting
to pounce on unsuspecting carriages. Many of which were travelling
to and from the palace. As you travel around in your car hire give
a thought to what life might have been like during this period.
Car jacking may be a modern term but it certainly has its origins.
The number of people living in Thames Ditton around 1801 remained
small with around 1,288 residents living in 265 dwellings. Most
of the people worked in handicraft, manufacture and agriculture
as well as domestic and ancillary emplyment.
The 19th century saw the introduction of the railway and a school.
The village then began to expand.
