Sutton Local Information

Sutton is the main town in the London Borough of Sutton. It is located 17 kms. to the south west of Charing Cross. Archaeological finds can date the area back over ten thousand years but the main evidence of habitation dates to Roman times as the Roman Road, Stane Street, forms the northern boundary of the parish of Sutton. The town stands on the narrow belt of Thanet sands which allowed wells to provide clean water. This attracted settlers to the area from an early date.

Sutton railway station opened in 1847 providing a fast train service into central London. As a result of this new transportation link, Sutton’s population more than doubled between 1851 – 1861. Sutton Water Company was formed in 1863 and the provision of mains water allowed for houses to be built outwith the Thanet sands area. Residential development boomed and again the population of the town doubled between 1861 – 1871.

Today the town has two main shopping centres, three main churches and a park. There is plenty of nightlife in the town with a large array of clubs and bars manly situated around the high street area.

The town has featured in the TV series, The Bill, and the episode The Return of Mr. Bean was filmed on the site now occupied by Waterstones book store.
