Southfields Local Information

Southfields is situated in the London Borough of Wandsworth, 5.6 miles south west of Charing Cross. The town takes its name from the manorial system when it was the South Field of Dunsford. The name can be found in records dating back to 1247.

Southfields remained as fields until the late 19th century. When the Wimbledon to Putney railway line was opened in 1889 the town started to develop with the first school opening during the following year.

The main residential area in the town is known as The Grid, so named because of the grid layout of the streets. The houses in The Grid are almost entirely large Victorian terraced houses, some of which are now converted into flats. Until the 1990’s, an abstinence law prevented any pubs being built in The Grid. This law has now been lifted and there are two pubs next door to each other.

Due to the town’s excellent transport links with central London, house prices in the town have risen dramatically over the last 15 years. Southfield’s underground station is the nearest to the Wimbledon tennis championships and during the tournament local stores, restaurants and bars enjoy a boom in sales.

The town has a significant South African community as well as a Pakistani Muslim presence.
