South Norwood Local Information

South Norwood is a suburban development in the London Borough of Croydon.
At one point in the town’s history, over 20 pubs stood within a 1.5-mile radius. Many of these are now closed.

The main industry in the town used to be Handley’s Brickworks, situated to the south of the railway line. The Brickworks no longer exist and the site has been converted into a park and lake called Brickfields Meadow. To the north of the railway, you’ll find South Norwood Lake and Grounds. Local anglers and Croydon Sailing Club use this park. It is also home to a wide variety of aquatic birds.

There are plenty of sporting facilities in South Norwood including the Croydon Sports Arena, which is situated on the edge of South Norwood Country Park. Crystal Palace FC play their home games at Selhurst Park which is on the South Norwood/Selhurst border.

Two famous literary names have associations with South Norwood. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in Tennison road between 1891 and 1894. He used the area as the setting for one of his Sherlock Holmes novels, ‘The Adventure of the Norwood Builder.’ The author D. H. Lawrence taught at a school in the town before the 1st World War.
