Sidcup Local Information
In the London Borough of Bexley, Sidcup is primarily a suburban
area of London situated 11.3 miles south east of Charing Cross in
central London. The town is made up of the four areas of Blackfen,
Foots Cray, Longlands and Lamorbey.
Sidcup was originally a small village between London and Maidstone,
and much of the town is made up of 1930’s buildings when the
area experienced a large boom in development. Sidcup town centre
has a mix of large high street stores and small independent shops.
The name is derived from the word Cetecopp, which means seat shaped
or flat topped hill and is first noted in 1254.
Sidcup was once an area of wealthy merchants, and there were large
estates and homes in the surrounding countryside. A lot of these
grand homes have since gone but the parks and open spaces are still
evident today.
Of the manor houses that still remain, most have been converted
for other uses. Frognal House is now sheltered accommodation, Lamorbey
House is used by a college, Sidcup Place is a Brewers Fayre restaurant
and The Hollies is residential homes.
Sidcup train station is linked on the Charing Cross line and on
the platform of this station, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed
to form the Rolling Stones. Sidcup is also well connected to the
city centre on excellent bus routes.
