Sanderstead Local Information

Sanderstead is a village on the North Surrey Downs, 3 miles south east of Croydon. The name is thought to originate from the Anglo Saxon’s, Sandy Place, due to its location on the chalky downs. The village is surrounded by the protected green belt countryside providing residents and local wildlife alike with woodland, ponds and private gardens to enjoy.

The village is built around All Saints Parish Church where you can find records dating back to the 9th century showing that the manor of Sanderstead was presented to the Minister of Winchester. The manor remained a possession of the church until the time of Henry VIII and the reformation when it fell into the hands of the Atwood family. It remained under their control for the next 300 years.

Up until the early 1900’s, Sanderstead was very much a rural community specializing in arable farming. Sanderstead station opened in 1884 and residential dwellings started to appear between the station and the church. Gas and water services were introduced in the early 1900’s and electric lighting in 1907.

Until the 1930’s the village had only one shop, a dairyman, a wheelwright and a blacksmith. The main shopping area today is Cranleigh Parade which was built between 1932 and 1938. Two of the original businesses are still there and the parade has changed little since it was built.
