Roehampton Local Information

Roehampton is a large village in south west London, 6.3 miles from Charing Cross. The village has a large number of learning institutions including Roehampton University and Queen Mary Hospital, a teaching centre for medical students.

The old village of Roehampton is a very affluent area with many large detached houses. An old watering trough for Victorian carriages still remains at the junction of Medfield Street and Roehampton Lane. During the 18th century several aristocrats built their summer residences in Roehampton. These included Parkstead House, Downshire House, Grove House and Mount Clare which are now all part of the University of Roehampton’s campus.

Roehampton also houses the Alton Estate which is one of the largest council housing estates in the UK. The estate was used as a location for the futuristic 1966 film ‘Fahrenheit 451’. In recent years a process of regeneration has been under way on the estate.

Two former Prime Ministers, William Pitt the Younger and the Earl of Derby resided for a time in Roehampton as did the actor Sean Connery and William Harvey who discovered the principles of blood circulation.
