History and related information about Reigate

Reigate is a market town located at the foot of the North Downs in the English county of Surrey. It is one of the main towns in the borough of Reigate and Banstead.

The history of Reigate can be traced back to Roman times. The Romans are known to have made tiles for London villas in Reigate in the 1st century AD. In 1086, the town was known as Cherchefelle, meaning ‘church field’. The origin of the present name is unknown but possibly comes from ‘Roe-deer gate’ as the town was situated near to the entrance of de Warenne’s deer park.

William de Warenne, the second Earl of Surrey ordered Reigate Castle to be built and in 1150 the family ordered a town to be constructed below the castle. The castle eventually fell into decay and was demolished in 1648. The castle grounds remain as a public garden, and the caves beneath the old castle are occasionally opened for tours.

During the 13th century Reigate Priory was founded for monks of the order of St Augustine. After Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries, the estate was given to William Howard, 1st Baron of Effingham. The family lived there for 140 years with the most notable family member being Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham who commanded the force which defeated the Spanish Armada.
