Raynes Park Local Information

Raynes Park is a suburb of the city of London. It is located within the Borough of Merton in south west London. It is a relatively prosperous commuter town although there are not many major shops in the town. The nearest shopping centre is in nearby Winbledon. House prices have increased rapidly in recent years as more people are forced to move further out of the centre of London.

Raynes Park was a largely rural community until the late 19th century. As with many similar suburbs of London, the first major housing developments came about as a result of the railways. Originally the name Raynes Park was used for the area south of the railway line. The name referred to the Rayne family who were the landowners of the farmland. A number of detached houses were built but progress was slow and much of the area became a golf course and cricket grounds. The majority of the residential development did not take place until the 1930’s.

Raynes Park benefits from frequent train services into central London with over 200 trains a day going to Waterloo. The area also has many open spaces and parks, some of which are used as recreational sports grounds. Prince George’s playing field, as well as being the home of Raynes Park Vale FC, has hosted traveling funfairs and Hindu festivals.
