Petts Wood Local Information and History

In the London Borough of Bromley, Petts Wood is considered as an inter-war suburb of the city of London, and is situated between Orpington and Bickley.

Petts Wood was simple woodland and named after the local Petts family, who were leaders in shipbuilding for over 200 years. The town first appeared in 1577 when it was referenced to the Petts family.

Built in the 20th century by Basil Scruby and Noel Rees, the town was originally a woodland area with lakes and strawberry fields. The developer was attracted to the area due to its proximity to central London yet being surrounded by pleasant countryside. The name Noel Rees is still used by local estate agents today as a selling tool for houses designed and built by the duo.

Petts Wood was heavily bombed in World War II because of its proximity to a large and important railway junction. During this war, Charles de Gaulle, the future president of France, lived in Petts Wood.

The town grew significantly in the 1920’s and in recent years the village character that made it so attractive has started to decline as large supermarket and retail shops open, forcing the closure of local shops.

There is a memorial sundial in the woodlands around the town, which is named in honour of local daylight savings campaigner William Willett. The Daylight Inn pub is also named after him. The Jubilee Country Park is situated close to the main shopping area and has a number of several rare species of animals living within the park.
