Orpington Local Information
In the London Borough of Bromley, Orpington is a suburban town
with an extensive high street and large retail outlets on the outskirts
of the town.
In 1868, the South Eastern Railway opened linking the town with
Central London and Sevenoaks. This started a boom in housing as
wealthy businessmen from the city came here in search of housing.
This continued on when the line was widened in 1904 and Orpington
train station was rebuilt with six platforms. As a result of this,
the majority of housing in Orpington is from the 1920’s and
1930’s when the town saw major housing development.
Orpington train station is linked to Charing Cross, Cannon Street,
Waterloo East, London Bridge and Victoria. The town also has major
bus links into the centre of London. These fantastic transport links
make Orpington a popular place for commuters to live.
During World War 2, the town was subject to extensive bombing due
to its location on the flight path to London, as well as it’s
proximity to Biggin Hill aerodrome. Housing development continued
after the war with the construction of a large council street.
Stone Age tools have been found in numerous places in Orpington,
including Goddington Park, the Ramsden estate and Priory Gardens.
Bronze Age pottery pieces have also been unearthed in the Park Avenue
area and in 1956, during the building of the Ramsden Boys School,
the remains of a farmstead were uncovered.
Orpington is known for numerous things, including the chickens
bred locally and the Orpington Car which was showcased at the 1920
Motor Show. The town has been regularly featured on TV on a Honda
Civic advert, Eurostar advert, The Simpsons, Kodak advert and several
times on The Bill.
