History and related information about North Cheam
North Cheam, part of the large suburban village of Cheam, is situated
close to Sutton in the London borough of the same name. It is more
of a shopping area than a residential one.
Cheam’s history can be traced back to the early 11th century
when it was owned by Chertsey Abbey. In the Middle Ages, the area
was know for its potteries and in 1538 a part of Cheam was handed
over to Henry VIII.
Lumley Chapel, next to St Dunstan’s church in the town centre,
is the oldest standing building in the Sutton Borough. Also in the
centre of Cheam village you can visit Whitehall. The original timber
framed house dates back to the early 1500’s. It has since
been extended and is open to the public on most afternoons.
Within Nonsuch Park there is a gothic revival mansion built in
the early 19th century. Nonsuch park was originally a deer hunting
park established by Henry VIII and it surrounded the former Nonsuch
Palace. There is nothing left of the palace but occasionally the
service wing of the mansion house is opened to the public.
Whatever your reason for being in North Cheam, getting a van hire
from the Car Hire Company will provide you with outstanding quality
at a value price.
