Morden Local Information

Morden is a town in the London Borough of Merton, approximately 10 miles south west of Central London.

There is proof of human activity around the Morden area in pre-historic times when Celtic tribes are known to have had settlements around Wimbledon. The first significant development in Morden’s history came with the construction of the Stane Street Roman Road.

Morden remained a rural settlement throughout the 19th century and the population was clustered around St. Lawrence’s church. Near the church was The George Inn, now modernized, originally a 17th century coaching inn. The other public house in the village at that time was the Crown Inn situated to the north east of the village.

The main industry remained agriculture during the 19th century although there was a little industrial activity along the River Wandle where watermills were used to grind tobacco into snuff. The situation remained the same during the first two decades of the 20th century.

In 1926, Morden Underground Station opened, linking the village with Central London. This signaled the opening up of the village for residential development. The town is now a suburban area. The area does still have excellent parks and playing fields.
