Merton Local Information
The historic town of Merton contributed its name to the London
Borough of the same name. It is bordered by Wimbledon to the north,
Mitcham to the east, Morden to the south and Kingston upon Thames
to the west. The town is centred around the twelfth century parish
church of St. Mary's in Merton Park. The original village was located
on the Roman road, Stane Street which joined London to Chichester.
Merton Abbey or Priory was founded in 1114. It became an Augustinian
establishment in 1117 and developed a good reputation for scholarship.
It was the birthplace of William de Merton, who later went on to
found Merton College in Oxford. Famous people educated at the Abbey
include St. Thomas Beckett and Nicholas Breakspear. The Abbey closed
in 1538 and its buildings were dismantled.
The established industry in the area by the 18th century was textile
manufacturing. However, until the 20th century, the area around
Merton remained mostly rural in character, the main residential
and commercial centres being at Merton Park and along the High Street.
During the first two decades of the 20th century, the population
of the town almost quadrupled.
The most famous past resident of Merton is Admiral Horatio Nelson.
In 1802 he purchased Merton Place and estate for the sum of nine
thousand pounds and various commemorations to him can be found in
the town.
