Egham Local Information
Egham is a historic town that contains many old buildings and attractions
reachable with excellent van hire. Places of interest include the
amazing Savill Garden, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, Town
Centre, Runnymead Pleasure Grounds, The Swan Sanctuary, Langham
Ponds, John F. Kennedy Memorial, Ripley Springs and the Magna Carta
Memorial. Egham was established before 666 AD and was part of Chertsey
Abby. The manor of Egham dates back to before 1215 and belonged
to the Crown by 1540.
When you have van hire in Egham you will be able to visit the Magna
Carta Memorial which is located at the foot of Cooper’s Hill.
Near the peak of the hill you will find another memorial that was
built to commemorate allied airmen of the Second World War. This
large memorial is of special architectural interest as it is the
first building to be built after the War. In Egham Graveyard there
is an interesting site of a coffin suspended on chains. Apparently
the deceased did not want to be buried but to remain above ground
so this was the end solution.
The Savill Garden in Egham can be visited at any time when you
have van hire. It was designed by Sir Eric Savill in the 1930’s
and is a beautiful ornamental garden. It forms part of the Royal
Landscape which includes the Valley Gardens and Virginia Water all
inside Great Windsor Park. There are many exotic plants and designs
in the Savill Garden and you can also visit the eye catching Savill
Building and Garden Gallery opened in 2006. Buried underneath this
site is a time capsule filled by students of the Royal School.
