Carshalton Local Information
Carshalton is home to Carshalton Park, although it is now about
10% of its original size. In 1892 it began to be sold off for development,
and as a consequence, many areas that used to be within the park’s
boundaries are now no longer. For example, in the Square lies the
old Orangery – this was once in the park. If you take the
north entrance to the park, just inside them is what is believed
to have been a pond, and dates back to 1444.
In the late 1700s it was used as a water reservoir for the mill,
but now it forms an amphitheatre, being dry (although still referred
to as a pond). Wander down to the south east corner, and you can
see the old grotto – also now dry, it was built in 1924 as
part of big plans for the park, and the dry bed still runs to Carshalton
Place. There are several events in the park each year, from a fireworks
display in November, to an environmental fair in August, and a festival
in June.
Oaks Park was laid out in the 1770s, for the villa that stood nearby
(the villa was built in the 1750s). Now all that remains are the
bakehouse, stables and some other outbuildings. A bit over to the
west is the Epsom Downs Racecourse, which runs the Oaks horserace
every year – Oaks Park lends its name to the race.
