Beckenham Local Information

Beckenham is a town in the London borough of Bromley, and Beckenham’s name is thought to originate from Beohha’s homestead (although the word beck means ‘stream’ in Old English – and Beck River is named after Beckenham). Beohha is believed to be the first settler in the area, and ‘ham’ means village. At the centre of Beckenham stands Saint George’s Church, and the lychgate there is said to be the oldest in England, having been built in the 1200s. The church itself stands on a Saxon site dating back to the 500s.
