Banstead Local Information
Situated in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, the town of Banstead
is situated in Surrey and is on the North Downs. The land around
the town is protected by the Green Belt and Banstead Downs is a
Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Situated on the A217 dual carriageway and with several bus routes
to Epsom, Sutton and Croydon, Banstead is an excellent location
for travelling with ease into the city centre and surrounding areas.
Although the town has a railway station, it is actually closer to
the village of Nork than Banstead.
With a typical high street, Banstead has a lot of upper middle
class retail outlets and restaurants indicating the type of residents
who live in the town. Due to the limited amount of large employments
in the town and its proximity to London, the majority of residents
are commuters into the city centre. Each year on Remembrance Day
and St George’s Day, the Scouts and Guides parade up and down
the high street.
The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book as the settlement
of Benestede and was worth £8. Although Banstead is actually
a town, it is commonly referred to as Banstead Village. The old
village well is still evident today and is almost 300 feet deep,
and was last used at the end of the 19th century.
The 12th century All Saints Parish church also still stands in
the town and Nork Park is home to the remains of the once grand
Colman family mansion, the same family who to this day still produced
the famous brand of mustard.
