Thamesmead is a newly built town on the south side of the river Thames. It is located in the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich. Thamesmead was built on land that extended over 'Plumstead’ and 'Erith Marshes' and was designed to help cope with the overflow of population from the City of London. The first residents moved into the new riverside town in the late 1960’s.

Although the town itself is very new, there is evidence that humans were active in the area as early as in the Bronze Age. Monks from the nearby Lesnes Abbey were the first people to reclaim the marsh land back in the 13th century. They used the land for cultivating crops and rearing animals.

The southern part of town was used by Stanley Kubrick for location shots for the 1971 film The Clockwork Orange.
