Perched on a hill, the Anglo-Saxon village of Sanderstead, CR2, can be found at the end of London’s urban sprawl. Since the Bronze Age, this area has been inhabited. In the 1980s archaeologists uncovered north African pottery remnants. The village of Sanderstead dates back to the 10th century when it was gifted to the abbot and convent of Hyde in Winchester.

While the village is mainly a suburban commuter oasis offering a number of amenities it rather curiously has no pub. This possibly dates back to a strong religious stance taken by the rector at All Saints Church. The earliest part of the church was constructed in the 13th century and many additions have been made since.

While public transportation to Croydon is efficient, it does not provide adequate routes to nearby towns such as Warlingham, Selsdon and Hamsey Green. When exploring the area, a minibus rental is recommended to allow your group to travel independently.
