Reigate Local Information
Situated just 22 miles from central London, Reigate is a commuter
town which is rich in history. Reigate Castle was the seat of the
Earldom of Surrey. Built in the 12th century, the stone castle was
destroyed in the 17th century following the Civil War. Only the
castle’s earth workings exist above ground and it is now home
to Reigate’s park and gardens.
Beneath the castle however, are man-made tunnels, the first constructed
to connect the castle keep with the village of Reigate below. While
the site is popular with visitors in the 21st century, exploring
the caves and their graffiti shows that they were popular as far
back as 1783. Those travelling by stagecoach to London from Brighton
frequently stopped in Reigate to explore the caves.
Both Reigate Castle and the caves beneath Baron’s Mound are
located in the centre of town and adequate parking is on hand for
