Chiswick is Old English for ‘cheese farm’, although it started as a fishing village. By the early 1800s the centuries-old tradition of using the old Chiswick waterfront to deliver goods to the area was in decline as industry and the newly-invented flushing toilet meant the river was becoming increasingly polluted.
