Woking Local Information and History
In the West of Surrey, just 23 miles South West of Charing Cross
in Central London sits the town of Woking, considered as a dormitory
town of the London commuter belt.
Woking’s excellent transport links make it ideal for those
commuting into the city centre and has made the town a desirable
place to live. Woking railway station is on the Alton Line, Portsmouth
Direct Line, South Western Main Line and the West of England Main
Line. The number of connects means there are frequent and easy connections
to and from London Waterloo, taking just half an hour to get into
the city centre.
Woking is also easily accessible via motorways and major roads,
close to the M25, M3 and the A3. Bus services run through Woking,
including a coach service connecting the town and London Heathrow
Airport to all terminals, as well as links to surrounding towns.
The town is twinned with Rastatt in Germany, Amstelveen in the
Netherlands and Le Plesses-Robinson in France. Modern Woking was
built around the railway station, dating back 150 years, and was
home to the first crematorium and mosque in the UK.
Woking was home to the author H.G. Wells, who wrote the book The
Ware of the Worlds, and based it in the town. The Jam are also from
Woking and the song A Town Called Malice is about Woking, as is
the song Stanley Road.
