Weybridge Local Information, History and Attractions
Situated in South East England, in the Elmbridge district of Surrey,
Weybridge is bordered at the North by the River Thames at the mouth
of the River Wey.
Weybridge takes its name from the River Wey and was at one time
simply a river crossing. It was mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday
Book and was noted as being worth £4. In 1537, Henry VIII
built Oatlands Palace, when it was demolished in 1650, the bricks
were used to build the Wey Navigation canal. The Oatlands Park Hotel
now occupies the original site of the Palace.
The town opened their station on the London and Southampton railway
in 1838, which began the development of what was originally a small
village. As affluent businessmen arrived from the city, large houses
began popping up and the area grew into a thriving town. The Veterinary
Laboratories Agency, part of DEFRA, has offices in Weybridge and
is one of the main testing sites for the Bird Flu virus.
Weybridge has a number of monuments, including one of the Duchess
of York which was erected in 1820, as well as a World War One memorial.
The town is also home to the UK head offices of Toshiba, Sony and
Procter and Gamble.
Weybridge is an important area which has many rare species of insects,
birds and plants, although it was left to become overgrown, the
Surrey Wildlife Trust recently began a scheme to clear the area.
