Westerham Local Information
In the Sevenoaks district of Kent, Westerham is located below the
North Downs and covers 5,800 acres.
Westerham is dated back to as early as the 9th century and is mentioned
in the Domesday Book with ancient relics such as a Celtic fortification
and a Roman road being uncovered. In 1227, Henry III granted Westerham
a market charter and brought about a tradition of cattle trading.
This continued for thousands of years with the last cattle market
being in 1961. There are also the ruined remains of a medieval watchtower
and a Roman encampment.
The village centre has an unusual abundance of restaurants and
cafes along the main street. Westerham is on the M25 and the A25
runs though the area. On July 7, 1881, the South Eastern railway
opened the 4.5 mile line to Westerham from Dunton Green. Unfortunately,
all the services were withdrawn on October 28, 1961. A section of
the M25 now runs over part of this disused railway.
A number of buildings and streets in and around Westerham are named
after General James Wolfe and there is also a statue of him in the
main village square.
A tourist attraction in the village of Westerham is the home of
the Warde family, who have lived in the village in Squerryes Court
since 1731. In 1922, Winston Churchill bought Chartwell Manor which
was the home for the majority of his lift; the house is now under
the administration of the National Trust. There is a statue of Winston
Churchill on the village green.
