Teddington Local Information
If we were to have a search for the most well-to-do suburb name,
‘Teddington from the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames’
would have to be an entrant. Teddington is home to the Teddington
Lock, built in 1811 and the first lock on the river. It is also
the longest lock on the river and connects Teddington to Ham (in
Surrey). The suspension bridge built in 1889 also does this. The
Royal National Lifeboat Association has the only volunteer station
on the river which opened in 2001.
Although evidence suggests that people did live in Teddington back
in Roman times it was in the time of the Saxons before any settlement
became permanent. By the 1300s the Abbot of Westminster owned the
land. In preparation for the handing over of Hampton Court to Henry
VIII, in 1500 as part of the construction of the gardens part of
Teddington was enclosed to form Bushy Park.
The Teddington parish church is Saint Mary with Saint Alban and
a church has stood on the site for about 1000 years. The south aisle
is the oldest part of the church and was built in the 1500s. The
church holds a Harvest Festival each year with foods used to decorate
the church later given to charities.
Famous residents of Teddington, or people born in Teddington, include
Benny Hill, Alan Turing, Oliver Reed and Julian Clary.
