Selsdon Local Information
Selsdon is located in the London Borough of Croydon and was developed
as late as 1920-1930 between the wars. It is known for the Selsdon
Park Hotel where members of the Selsdon Group met. The Selsdon Group
were a political group of Conservatives created in 1973 who believe
that only through economic freedom can one obtain political and
social freedom.
In 1970 Edward Heath and his cabinet met at the Selsdon Park Hotel
to formulate policies, which subsequently saw the Prime Minister
Harold Wilson lose at the next elections. Heath abandoned the policies
adopted at the Selsdon Park Hotel, which lead to the formation of
the Selsdon Group in 1973, which proposed to uphold the free market
policies that won the election in 1970. Although widely panned at
the time, the ideals have won favour in later years with policies
being adopted by the likes of John Major and Margaret Thatcher.

Selsdon Wood is a large (200 acres) spanse of nature reserve and
bird sanctuary, opened in 1936 and created after the too-rapid development
of the town. The Wood is owned by The National Trust, but managed
by the Croydon Parks Department.
Comprising five large meadows and surrounded by ancient hedges
and woodlands and serves to preserve a glimpse of the Surrey natural
environment for future generations. The Woods form part of the boundary
of Selsdon.
