Sanderstead Local Information
Sanderstead is part of the Borough of Croydon in London and has
been documented in records dating back to 871. In the Domesday Book
it was held by Saint Peter’s Abbey, Winchester (Hyde Abbey),
but evidence has been found to suggest a population in the Bronze
Age. Take a minibus hire to see the brass monument that marks the
spot and stand where ancient people stood some 3000-4000 years BC.
Oddly, during the construction of Atwood School, items were uncovered
that dated back to the Roman times but came from North Africa.
Sanderstead Court, former home to the Atwood family, was first
built in the early 1500s. The Atwoods lived there for 300 years,
before it was turned into a hotel in the 1900s. After being damaged
by fire in 1938, it was demolished in the 1950s, and the current
Sanderstead Court is a block of units.
Sanderstead does not have a pub, so if you’re planning of
taking a minibus hire and a bunch of mates on a pub crawl, you’ll
need to drive over to nearby Warlingham.
The All Saints Parish Church dates back to the 800s, back when
Sanderstead was presented to Saint Peter’s. When under Henry
VIII the monasteries were dissolved, the Manor fell to the Atwoods.
The oldest building in Sanderstead is reported to be the White
House, dating back to the 1500s. Hire a minibus today, and see Sanderstead’s
historical landmarks.
